Dumaresq Studio

London

The client, a barrister with a young family, wanted to create a private space for herself at the top of her 19th-century house in Primrose Hill in North London to exploit the unused roof space and the fine views over north London at the rear of the property.

The large studio space was achieved by replacing the original roof structure with a new steel-framed structure which incorporated a full width roof light at the rear. Below this new roof a steel framed sleeping gallery was inserted with toughened glass balustrading and a simple staircase in stainless steel and oak.

Below the gallery there is a free standing oval, translucent glass bathroom containing a shower, basin and WC. Its central location provides a degree of separation between the study area at the rear and the larger living space at the front of the property. At night the internally lit glass oval also provides the primary light source for the space as a whole.
